creo™ Express (Comprehensive Research Education Online )

Research is critical to achieving the best results in health care.

creo™ Express (Comprehensive Research Education Online) provides a brief overview of key research design and method concepts through which novice to experienced health researchers, staff, trainees and physicians can increase their research literacy. Participants can further build their research capacity through interactive discussion boards with peers and experts, lessons about a range of topics fundamental to excellence in health research, and up-to-date references to support an understanding of research design.

Jointly designed and developed by the Izaak Walton Killam (IWK) Heath Centre and CHA Learning, creo courses build research capacity and are supported by experts in Canadian health research.

creo Express Course Overview

Who should take creo Express?

creo Express is designed for health professionals, trainees, leaders and physicians in health organizations of all sizes, who are seeking to increase their own research literacy and skills. Participants may include:

  • Health scientists, researchers and trainees
  • Clinicians and health professionals
  • Stakeholders in the health research enterprise (e.g., executive leaders, administrators, administrative assistants, project coordinators)
  • Knowledge users

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Critically appraise primary sources of evidence (research articles)
  • Understand the basic steps and principles of good research design
  • Identify the important information to look for when reading or reporting research results
  • Appreciate the need to communicate research findings in meaningful ways to multiple audiences who can benefit or learn from results
  • Apply strategies to writing funding applications for grant support of research or other initiatives

Professional Education Credits

This Program is eligible for 2 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits through the Canadian College of Health Information Management.

The College requires that all professional members complete continuing professional education (CPE) activities as an integral part of their membership. The CPE program is in place to ensure health information professionals enhance their skills and expand their knowledge for the duration of their career.

For the creo Express course, students must meet the following requirements.


English is the language of instruction for all CHA Learning courses. It is therefore recommended that students be competent in reading, writing and speaking English.


Students must have basic computer knowledge and internet navigation skills; and access to a computer with Windows 7 or higher.

Please note:

  • Students choosing to use Mac or Linux operating system must have experience using alternate remote access software.
  • CHA Learning staff can only assist Windows operating system users and provide technical support in relation to our website; we do not provide technical support for internet and/or basic computer use.

Enrolment Process

To enrol:

  1. Click on the enrol/apply button
  2. Add the product to your cart
  3. Create an account if you are new to CHA Learning or sign in to your existing account
  4. Complete the Billing Information page
  5. Enter your payment information, accept the terms and conditions and make your payment
  6. Within seven business days, you will receive an email with instructions to access the course/program materials.

Students will be evaluated on seven quizzes as well as a final examination.


To achieve a certificate, students must earn an average of 50% or greater on each graded component; and an overall course grade of at least 50%.

creo Express Course Certificate

Students receive a certificate in creo Express, jointly issued by CHA Learning and Izaak Walton Killam Health Centre, upon successful completion of the course.
